For beginners, learning guitar goes something like this...
- Open chords: There are about 12. We learn them one at a time, then how to move from one chord to another.
- Rhythm: Strumming the guitar chords and negotiating chord changes while strumming a particular rhythm.
- Picking notes: Playing melodies over a backing accompaniment, with pick or fingers.
- Barre chords: The basic shapes which allow you to play many chords.
- Reading: Chords, notation and TAB
- Music theory: Understanding why chords go together.
The best way to learn any instrument, but especially guitar, is to pick a song to learn, even if you have no knowledge of the instrument. As you learn new chords, you can add new songs. Beginners are welcome!
Learn the rudiments of bass playing, pick and finger style, time signatures, keys. It's not all TAB, y'know... Professional players know their charts, and you can too with a little application.
You'll be amazed how many well-known songs can be played using just 3 or four chords.
But it's not just chords. You'll receive a thorough education about the fretboard, reading music, chord substitution, tuning and restringing your instrument, which strings suit your fingers and the style of song you want to play.
Have you ever sat down with a piece of music, played the chords and wondered why it doesn't sound like the original? Maybe it has to do with the inversions of the chords you are using.
Combining scales, modes, chords and songs which incorporate all these elements means that you don't get bored with continually dealing with just one aspect of learning guitar.
Open chords: Em, Am, Dm, G, C, A, E, D, D7 and barre chords!
Knowing just 2 or 3 chords puts a world of songs literally at your fingertips.
We also have our own specially designed courses based on the student's level of development, and employ the use of Cubase, Wavelab, Guitar Pro, Finale and Band-In-A-Box etc as teachings aids.
Let's not forget SCALES, and MUSIC THEORY. The structures upon which we build.
Roxanne is a NSW Conservatorium-trained guitarist, with a wealth of experience as a live performer on stages right around Australia and overseas. Her "no-nonsense" approach to guitar tuition is enjoyed ny many of her students, who may have begun with vocal lessons, then decided to augment theirabilities by adding an instrument.
Having performed professionally as a pianist, singer, guitarist and songwriter for over 20 years, Stephen has a wealth of knowledge, not only of the finer points of the instrument and music styles, but also how to apply this knowledge in the real world of the Australian music scene.
Bring along the song you've always wanted to learn. We'll work it out, learn to play it, meanwhile learning some other valuable musical lessons on the way.
How about those added stylistic sounds which feature say in a country song, or an old rocker? These are the gems of information which allow you to really improve your playing ability, knowledge of thory and practice.
to discuss how we can work together to help you realise your goals.
