People have often asked about the origin of the name "Oobie Ootchie Trio".

"What is an 'Oobie'?," they ask, and "What is an 'Ootchie'?".

From the New England Dictionary of Colloquial Terms: 1
"Oobies" or "oobes" (shortened version) - colloquial slang for the item of undergarment worn by both males and females to conceal/protect the lower body sexual organs and anal areas of the body. It is thought that term had it’s origins in senior Catholic boys high schools and it’s usage can be traced back to the early 1970’s.

A typical example of usage: "My oobies are giving me a wedgie".
(translation: "My lower undergarment has become embedded in my rectal cavity"..)

From the Modern Military Reference Manual for Young Gentlemen Reprint 1906: 2
"Ootchie" - a military term referring to a type of 2 or 3 man heavy duty plastic protection device (sometimes called a tent) often used in military camping exercises (sometimes known as bivouacs) conducted in medium to heavy Australian terrain (sometimes known as bush).

A typical example of usage: “Our f ***ing ootchie leaks!”
(translation: “There appears to be an ingress of rain water into our 3 man protection device causing some discomfort”.)

At a recent press conference, a reporter from CNNNN asked the members of the Oobie Ootchie Trio.

Shoot The Oobies JR: "As the most good-looking member of the group, I can say that my oobies are clean, and have never, I repeat, never been in trouble of any sort. Anyone who is prepared to believe what those girls said in the Sunday papers would do well to mind their own business and remember just how much enjoyment the Oobies have given to their..."

BM: "What Joni's saying in his own inimitable way is that the term "oobie" came about as an affectionate term for a particular article of underclothing with which we found we were all very enamoured, and, like.."

SK: "Why don't we show them a picture, fellows? Why don't we tell it like it is?"

JR: "Sure, Steve"

BM: "Right!"

TRIO: Oobies! / / / Oobies! / / / Oobies! / / / Oobies! / / /

JR: "Sure, oobies are great! We had a lot of fun in the Ootchie, after we discovered we all loved our oobies, and even better, we loved each other's oobies! Oh yeah, oobies are great, oobies are fun, oobies like to get close to you and they never ever let you down, unless you let them down in the first place."

BM: "Right!"

SK: "We like our oobies."

So, okay, now we know what an "oobie" is. But what of the "Ootchie"?
Where did this ubiquitos term originate?
Again we ask the boys:

Q: "Where did this ubiquitos term originate, boys?"

SK: "What term?

Q: "Ootchie."

SK: "Oh, that term."

BM: "The "Ootchie" is an article of military apparal which is capable of being used in a number of ways to help facilitate easier living conditions when one is bivouacing in bushland. One use of the Ootchie is to extend it over a piece of ground, put a pole through the middle, prop it into the air, secure the sides with metal pins and rope, or stones and you have accomodation for two, or three if they know each other well, for the evening.

JR: And I never did nothing with any girls, animals or musical instruments in any sort of perverted way in any Ootchie, anytime. Do you realise what a burden it is to be this good-looking? Do you? People turn up from under rocks and simply tell lies to gain publicity for themselves. It's not fair, I didn't touch her, it, I mean...

BM: Conversely, you can wrap the Ootchie arounf your neck and secure it with a pair of oobies and you have a useful raincoat for when the wather becomes inclement. let's face it, an Ootchie is your best friend when you're out on the land.

SK: We were raised by dingoes, you know.

Note 1: There is some historical data available that links this reference and the hugely popular Super Hero aliases used by the trio - namely Prince Penis, Vas Deferens and the Scrotum Kid. There is also evidence that the reference influenced the famous "Big Bum" song - a huge hit in the early 70’s with the Oxford Street night club scene.

Note 2: It is thought that numerous hours spent inside one of these devices in one fateful ‘bivouac’ in the Moonbi Ranges in the early 70’s sowed the seeds and provided the inspiration for many of the popular hits that this world famous group produced.
